Brushing with Braces

Flossing with Braces

Cleaning Your Removable Retainer

Brush your removable appliance every day as a part of your regular brushing and flossing schedule. Because food particles and plaque can accumulate on your appliance just as they do on your teeth, brush the appliance daily. Dissolve a Polident, Efferdent or other denture-cleaning tablet in a glass of tap water at room temperature and soak your appliance once a month. Your appliance will taste better, and you will prevent plaque and bacterial accumulation. Watch the video for instructions to floss your bottom retainer.

Food List

When wearing any orthodontic appliance that is cemented to your teeth, such as braces and expanders, you might need to modify your diet to eliminate:

HARD FOODS, such as…

STICKY FOOD, such as…

  • Ice
  • Popcorn
  • Corn Chips
  • Hard Candy (Jolly Ranchers, etc.)
  • Lollipops
  • Peppermint sticks and candy canes
  • Lifesavers
  • Large hard pretzels

ALSO, PLEASE DO NOT chew on:

    • Gum (especially bubble gum)
    • Caramels
    • Taffy
    • Now and Later candy
    • Tootsie Rolls
    • Starburst
    • Licorice
    • Skittles

Use common sense when choosing food to put into your mouth. Just because you do not see it on our list, does not mean it will not damage your braces! Remember that broken appliances can slow down your treatment!

  • Pens
  • Pencils
  • Fingernails
  • ETC.
